This course is an introduction to and comparative analysis of a variety of ecosystems and environmental issues in India. Topics include tropical ecosystems’ structure and dynamics, past and present human interaction with the landscape, adaptations of flora and fauna, and natural history. The course will also explore relationships between human culture and the natural environment, including those among human population, culture, ecology, and food production. We will discuss questions of sustainability in the world’s largest democracy, and examine how the diversity of cultures in India views their relationship with the environment. We will examine human perception of the environment, and our role in the environment, and how India has transformed the natural environment.
