India Past and Present is a general course on the cultures, arts, religions, and history of India from ancient times through the independence movement and to the present. Many class sessions for these courses will take place during visits to various historical sites. Lectures and field trips focusing on some of the pressing problems faced by contemporary India and institutions that address those problems. Topics include Indian cultural traditions, the status of women, Indian philosophy; art; religious movements; and political, social, and economic systems, implications of the population explosion, economic conditions, and the political process.
